I've noticed you can't use BB Code spoiler tags in this forum, it'd be great if you could add it
For those who don't know, these work like this: you type
- insert spoiler, long text, long list, a message to one particular user here
and it should look similar to a quote box with a link saying "reveal spoiler" on it. when you click on it, the spoiler box expands, revealing the whole text between
and an alternate use is to type
- [spoiler=(insert here things like "click to reveal" or "show my char list")] here goes the text again [/spoiler]
it should look like a normal spoiler box, only with a link saying << (insert here things like "click to reveal" or "show my char list") >> and not << reveal spoiler >>
It is very useful to:
- Hide spoilers for people who don't want to know the end of the anime you're discussing about.
- Hide a long list of chars, builds, record times, links, etc... only for those who want to see them (making the thread cleaner)
- When playing an RPG on the forum, the GM can use multiple spoiler tags, so that the player doesn't have to search for the paragraph about him, just for the right spoiler box
- Making a long FAQ or guide easier to read (unfortunately you can only open a spoiler tag, you can't close it most of the times)
- Some more uses, like in a signature.
so.. if it's possible to add things to the BB Code, it's be great
For a reference of a forum that has it, go to the
starmen.net forums

Tried to add the custom tag after Googling...
Still in experimental stage...
We'll see later if this will stay or removed...
CODE
[spoiler]
This is the first type of the spoiler tag.
It doesn't has a title for the spoiler.
[/spoiler]
[spoiler2=Title for the spoiler]
This is the second type of the spoiler tag.
It has a title for the spoiler.
[/spoiler2]
The result:
This is the first type of the spoiler tag.
It doesn't has a title for the spoiler.
This is the second type of the spoiler tag.
It has a title for the spoiler.

QUOTE(from me @ Apr 5 2007, 01:48 PM)

I still think the spoiler thing is useless. Big deal, the second u open it, for slow comps it might lag a bit, and it still is pointless, since ppl will obviously want to read what in that if they wanna reply. Conclusion, spoilers r pointless, it just makes everybody do more work just to read some crappy msg.
Yes, i stand by it for those reasons. Not really for the one about the possible lag for big msgs, but the rest. Its faster to just type it regularily. Also, once this goes in the siggy rule will become pointless since no1 will have a massive siggy. Plus ppl could just use index and stuff and ctrl+f to find things, but if theres spoilers ctrl+f might not work as well.
And thats my opinion on this.

hmm,one question though, will it work on offline when you save the pages?that'll still be pretty neat for something, but i dunno whats that yet>.<

Lol. Wouldnt u say its too much work to get to this msg?
Plus, element already found a bug with it. I dont know what he did or stuff so ask him.

to solomaster:
of course no one will have the work of putting a message meant to be read by everyone inseide a spoiler.
Also, no one will place spoiler tags unless they really want to, which could be either when putting a list like... "List of my MUGEN chars", obviously not everyone will be interested in it, all the message would do without a spoiler tag is spam up the page. With a spoiler, the people interested and Only the people interested in it will see it.
about conflicts with ctrl+f when trying to index things with spoiler tags: you just have to use it wisely. Like, using it only if all links show up nicely together in one screen (clicking in one link is less work than ctrl+f then typing the thing, then if you don't have firefox pressing enter or clicking the search button). Or: using it to hide the index if it's too long (so that people who always come back for some particular reference can go to that reference directly without having to scroll through the index)
about the bug... would that be making a spoiler with no text inside? XD
I'm not familiar with this particular spoiler tag, the one I knew from starmen.net was slightly different... and I don't think it let you make a spoiler tag with no text inside o_O

Well if ppl rnt interested in it they wont be reading the topic, so its really pointless.

Sometimes, we need it in an anime / film / game topic...
Peoples might come for information, review, help, or just discuss...
Not all people reading the topic already finished watching the anime / game, so there are some information they prefer not to read...

Hmmm...i wouldnt recommend it for guides tho...unless u go like:
1. title 1
1a. subtitle 1
1b. subtitle 2
2. title 2
2a. subtitle 3
And so on, and make the guide sort of like:
1. Title 1
1a. subtitle 1
Insert guide section here.
1b. subtitle 2
Insert guide section here.
And so on, cuz then ppl can use ctrl+f and type in subtitle 1 and itll take them rite to the spoiler containing it.
Hmmm...that would work...
Or if there rnt any subsections then they could just put:
1. Title 1
Section
2. Title 2
Section 2
Which also allows ctrl+f. Which means guides can be navigated without having the spoiler and ctrl+f problem, cuz the titles outside the spoiler.

found another bug, solos 1st spoiler in his last post opens SOMEONE ELSES spoiler up at the TOP so you cant have too many spoilers in one page????

Apr 9 2007, 03:32 AM
It doesn't always happen, need to be refreshed multiple times...
My guess is it's caused by this code...
CODE
mytagid = Math.floor( Math.random() * 100 );
This code means that if we use a spoiler tag, it will be given an id from random number between 0 - 99...
If we use many spoiler tag, it might repeat itself [have same id] which cause the bug earlier...
Assuming there won't be more than 100 spoiler tag in one page, I changed the multiplier to 1000000 just now...
Though it's still possible for the id to repeat itself, it should be very rare now...
brocoli
Apr 9 2007, 09:33 PM
hahahha =P
but... why is it random?? (*bizarre*)
strange... I think it should assign ids in order so that they don't repeat O_o""
and... (@solomaster) yeah, well XD I think you're right about that
another idea is to use spoiler tags to hide images of skills in a skill list...
this way you can put 2 or 3 images besides each other to describe the skill, and yet not everyone will need to load them if they don't want to.

Apr 10 2007, 06:36 AM
well, its pretty compact if the guide becomes like that,so all people see only a clickable index when they saw the guide, pretty neat but i'm still doubting it'll work fine since the bug is still there, and to a guide it'll be a major problem>.<

Apr 10 2007, 06:57 PM
Just do it. Its only some of the time that bug happens. The unlucky ppl who encounter the bug wont really have that big of a problem.

web "stuff" isnt my strong suit, but could you do something like set "mytagid" to some value, say "idcount," and increment "idcount" before assigning the next "mytagid" to it? if that would work, you wouldnt have to worry about repeating id's

Apr 11 2007, 11:45 PM
A bit too lazy to do that, plus I'm afraid it will make errors...

For the current code, I only need to add script to the custom tag, and each spoiler tag will create their own id [JavaScript]...
While to make it can increment itself, I believe we need to change the php file, make a local variable to be accessible by all spoiler tag in the page...
If it's not broken, don't mess with it...

Got another code from
another site...
It doesn't use id and nesting 2 different type of spoiler tag does work now...
But nesting 2 same spoiler tag still make errors, we need to upgrade to IPB 2.2 to fix this...
Will leave it be for now, since it looks better and the problem hopefully disappear if we upgrade to IPB 2.2 later...

The first type
The second type

Pretty usefull. And what was the bug?

Apr 20 2007, 11:21 PM
Since we upgraded to IPB 2.2, the bug is gone... I think...
Though the default IPB spoiler tag override the one added earlier [create black background]...
